Things to Do

There are several easy coastal walks to enjoy close by to Butterfly Cottage, both beginning from the convenient car park on the way to the Fishnish ferry terminal. There’s a wildlife hide here, giving you a sheltered spot to scan the Sound of Mull for wildlife in the water, with walks leading off in both directions around the coast.

The Fishnish to Garmony walk is a lovely there-and-back route with benches to soak up the views along the way, while the Fishnish forest walk is circular, enjoying mountain, woodland and sea views as you follow the path. Within a short drive, you can also access the start of some of Mull’s more mountainous walks, as well as the Scallastle forest path.

10 minutes to the south of the cottage is the Isle of Mull Hotel and Spa, where you can make use of the swimming pool or book an indulgent treatment or two, as well as enjoying evening meals. A little further south again leads you to Duart Castle, the historic seat of Clan Maclean, where you can explore the exhibits, have lunch at the castle tearoom and discover a small sandy beach.

Heading north, the road traces the undulations of the coast, giving you great sea views to pass the 20-minute journey up to the harbour town of Tobermory. There are a range of attractions to enjoy here, from the artisan gift shops and fantastic cafes and restaurants, to the museum and distillery – great options for Mull’s wilder weather days.

When the sun is shining, enjoy a round of golf in Craignure or Tobermory, or embark on a whale watching or wildlife cruise from the harbour. Butterfly Cottage promises a taste of Mull’s wilder side, great for outdoor pursuits, with the ease of having many of the island’s top attractions within easy reach too.
