Island living at its most charming, The Old Church combines coastal-inspired interiors with wow-factor waterfront views and character features at every turn, creating a stunning setting in which to stay.

The Old Church enjoys a superb position, right beside the sea on the shore of Loch Scridain. The garden extends right to the coast where you can sit and enjoy the awe-inspiring view of the sea and Mull's highest mountain. It is hard to think of a better location for a holiday house, and to add to the allure of this lovely spot, the house is full of character too.

The Old Church dates from 1891 and is stone built, with a small bell tower above the east gable. Entering the property, there is a spacious porch with pew seats and plenty of storage/hanging space. A second door then leads into the main open plan living, dining and kitchen area, and what a space it is…

This stunning room has been beautifully furnished. There are some lovely finishing touches and the natural colours and soft tones make this an inviting home. Much attention to detail and thought has been put into creating this superbly luxurious holiday cottage, from the rocking chair and painted wooden walls to the white-washed beams and calming palette of blues. The views over the loch and to the summit of Ben More are inspiring, and a glass door can be opened to the raised decking and front garden, bringing that glorious landscape in.

An oil fired stove at the centre of the room provides the heating, as well as electric wall heaters, and the property is very well insulated and warm throughout. There is television, DVD player, games and wifi provided, along with a fantastic selection of books about the history, geography and wildlife of the Isle of Mull.

The dining table comfortably seats six and the well-equipped kitchen is spacious and light and ideal for self-catering. A doorway from the kitchen leads to a rear utility area, external door and downstairs cloakroom. A staircase from the main living area leads to an upstairs landing and all bedrooms.

There are two double bedrooms (both with spacious king-sized beds) and a twin bedroom. Each bedroom has the luxury of its own ensuite bathroom, with a large shower, basin and w.c, and there is high quality bed linen and towels provided. The bedrooms all have amazing sea views over the loch and the full height of the 3,169ft high Ben More range – just imagine waking up to that every day!

The Old Church is located within a private and very well-tended and planted garden. There is a small lawn to the rear with a beautiful mix of shrubs and ornamental borders. A pebble drive runs around the front garden where there is a large lawn and the most superb views you could wish for. A pathway leads to a bench overlooking the rocky coast; a great place for observing otters, eagles and other passing birds.

Also in the garden is the well-insulated timber sitooterie (summer house) with electric heating. Inside there is a large comfy sofa and rocking chair, television and radio, along with books and a pair of binoculars. The glass end elevation offers superb views. This is a great separate space from the main house for observing wildlife; getting creative and producing artwork; playing games or just relaxing and spending time with family or friends. This holiday house really does have it all.

The Old Church is located within the settlement of Pennyghael on the Ross of Mull. There is a small shop as well as a hotel, which serves evening meals to non-residents. Carsaig is just a short drive away and offers stunning walking territory among south Mull’s dramatic coastal cliffs.

The village of Bunessan is a 15-minute drive away and has a couple of shops and a public house. Fionnphort is a further 10 minutes on, and has a village shop and some more options for eating out, as well as a range of boat trips that depart from here to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. Iona also make a great day trip with its historic abbey, beautiful coast and places to eat. The Ross of Mull has some of Mull's best white sandy beaches and there are lots of excellent walks on offer in this region of the island. Stay at The Old Church and you’re in prime position to enjoy them all.
