Salen Explore the area, things to do and more

Scots Cottage offers a luxurious homestay in the east coast village of Salen, with views framed by enormous windows that bathe the interior in light. This wonderful house feels like the perfect place in which to gather with family and friends. There is open countryside to the rear and excellent views over to the mountain of Dun da Gaoithe, and the shimmering tides of Salen Bay from the first floor.

Arriving at Scots Cottage, you will find the house on a residential street, set back from the road with ample parking for four or more vehicles on the gravel driveway. The house itself offers an impressive entrance into a spacious hall with plenty of space to store coats, boots and cameras ready to grab and go for the day’s adventures.

The principle living areas lead off to the left, where the superbly equipped contemporary kitchen greets you, complete with an island and breakfast bar and a convenient utility concealed behind a door, with useful storage and laundry facilities. An induction hob takes centre stage in the island, making meal preparations a sociable experience as you open a bottle of wine and converse. Then it’s an easy flow onto the dining table, which enjoys superb views of the countryside through patio doors.

With dinner served and the evening in full swing, the spacious living area promises a welcome retreat, furnished with two comfortable sofas and two armchairs, with a large television and yet more lovely views.

An excellent property for every generation, Scots Cottage features two ground floor bedrooms, served by a ground floor bathroom, with W.C, basin and bath, with one bedroom a spacious double, and the second a light-filled twin. Modern fixtures and fittings give both spaces an indulgent and restful feel, ideal for a bit of R&R after a day in the hills.

Guests staying on the upper floor will be equally rewarded, with the staircase leading to a cosy gallery for family games of table football, or simply a quiet corner to curl up with a page-turner or watch the tides change from the balcony.

Two further double bedrooms await on this level, with one enjoying an en-suite complete with walk-in rain shower, W.C., basin and heated towel rail. The second spacious double enjoys the luxury of a private sea view sitting area – lovely for morning coffee or a nightcap or two. A large bathroom on the same floor serves this bedroom, with a walk-in rain shower, bath, W.C., basin and heated towel rail.

A beautiful stone patio surrounds the rear of the property, with a large picnic bench for outdoor dining, before the remainder of the garden leads onwards to the surrounding fields, with wildflowers and rhododendrons adding interest through the seasons.

Only 20 minutes from the island’s harbour town of Tobermory and an even shorter drive delivering you to the wildlife haven of Loch na Keal, Scots Cottage is well located to enjoy Mull’s scenery, walking, wildlife and cycling. In the village, you can even hire kayaks and paddle boards should you fancy taking to the water, and there are several good cafes (The Little Bespoke Bakery and The Coffee Pot) to tempt you for lunch or a sweet treat.

With four bedrooms, four bathrooms and oodles of purpose-designed living space, Scots Cottage promises a holiday for every generation to remember, and a brilliant base to come together for quality time with friends and family.
