Loch Assapol Explore the area, things to do and more

Pack your binoculars and walking boots, because if you stay at Taigh Cian, you’ll have white-tailed eagles, otters and red deer for neighbours, a secluded loch for your view and excellent white sand beaches just a short distance beyond the door.

Taigh Cian is a stylish and contemporary holiday cottage sleeping four people and set on the hillside overlooking Loch Assapol on the Ross of Mull. This detached cottage has a private setting within an enclosed garden, from which there are excellent views over the loch and surrounding area.

From the cottage door, you can enjoy some excellent walks including the route to Shiaba, one of the clearance villages from where there are amazing views towards Carsaig. The area has diverse and abundant wildlife, keep your binoculars handy. White tailed eagles are a regular sighting from the cottage, circling over the loch, otters frequent the coast and red deer can be spotted on the hillside. Guests can enjoy fishing on the loch, and canoes or kayaks can be launched from the shore of Loch Assapol.

The cottage is ideally situated for exploring some of Mull's best beaches. All along the coast to the south of Taigh Cian are beaches of fine white sands and turquoise waters, from the broad sweep of sands at Kilvickeon, to hidden little coves that await your exploration.

There is parking for two or more cars on the driveway at Taigh Cian, as well as storage space for bikes and kayaks. Entering the cottage, there is a large hall with plenty of storage and lovely views over the water. A hallway leads to all other rooms in this single storey cottage.

The sitting room sits to the front of the cottage and is bright and airy with contemporary furnishings and a large leather sofa. A wood stove provides a cosy glow in the evenings and double sliding doors open to the raised timber decking and outdoor seating area. This is a real sun trap and provides a wonderful vantage point to soak up the surroundings and keep an eye out for eagles.

The open-plan dining and kitchen area is a welcoming, bright room with lots of natural light and views of the hills and loch. There is comfortable seating around the dining table for evening meals and the kitchen is very well-appointed and equipped for self-catering. The stove is housed on the breakfast bar, which means you can easily chat and socialise with family while preparing a meal.

The double bedroom is ensuite with a king-sized bed and views over the loch – a room with a view in a wonderfully remote setting. Quality bedding means you will enjoy a good night's sleep at Taigh Cian and there is ample storage for personal belongings in the bedrooms. The ensuite has a large walk-in shower unit, a basin, and w.c. The twin bedroom has views to the rear of the house. A separate large family bathroom adjoins the hall and has a bath with shower unit over, basin and w.c.

Guests will really appreciate the high standard of Taigh Cian, and the setting, which is close to some of Mull’s most stunning coastline. The many opportunities for walks, cycling and wildlife watching will all make for a great holiday for couples and families alike.

The closest village to Taigh Cian is Bunessan, which is only five minutes by car. Here you will find the village shop and pub. Fionnphort is another 10 minutes by car and also has shops and eateries and a pub, but is perhaps best known as the crossing point to Iona, which makes a wonderful day trip from Taigh Cian. Boats also depart from Fionnphort sailing to the Treshnish Isles and Staffa - both great tours that allow you to see the superb geology and wildlife of Mull’s west coast islands. If you book in season, you can even take a peek at the charming puffin colony on your trip!
