Tobermory Explore the area, things to do and more

After following the Sound of Mull up the island’s east coast and enjoying your first glimpse of Tobermory decorating the hillside with colourful properties, you arrive at the private oasis that is Canna. Set in an elevated position on a quiet residential lane, the house has been lovingly designed with an upside-down layout to maximise the outstanding sea views over Tobermory Bay and Calve Island.

Park on the private driveway that forms one side of the leafy front garden, before stepping over the threshold to discover a truly special house within. A large entrance hall welcomes you into the upper level of the cottage, with a built-in cupboard beside the door to stow coats and boots out of sight, as well as a convenient W.C. and basin on this floor.

The space has a gallery-like feel, with artworks by renowned painters Jolomo and AA Johnson embellishing the walls and diamonds of parquet detailing adding artistry to the solid oak floors.

Both the kitchen and the main living room lead off the hallway. Taking centre stage at the end of the house, the living room is bright and spacious with a vaulted ceiling and elegant glazing framing the sea view. Two swivel chairs sit in the picture window, enabling you to enjoy the aspect through 360 degrees, while the reclining sofa that sits opposite the fireplace with a 60-inch television above invites you to put your feet up and unwind.

A range of lighting options, from antique light fittings to contemporary LED strip lights, invite you to set the atmosphere for every occasion, from a romantic dinner at the stylish table and chairs for two, to settling down with a good book and watching the weather blow in on wilder days.

The kitchen benefits from the same attention to detail and high-end finishes, with an electric oven, electric induction hob and oil-fuelled Rayburn (turned off during the summer months to keep the kitchen cooler!) to delight the chefs amongst us. Feature tiled floors and an artistic splashback make the space feel unique, with every convenience attended to, from the DeLonghi filter coffee machine to the integrated dishwasher, full-size fridge freezer and bone china serving-ware.

Returning to the hallway, an elegant oak staircase leads down to the ground floor, where the luxurious master suite and yet more beautiful living areas await. The master bedroom is at once opulent and serene, with French influences inspiring the furnishings and wallpaper choices. A good night’s sleep is guaranteed in the king-sized bed, complete with Egyptian cotton linen, waking to birdsong from the woodland that can be seen from the window.

Both a spacious dressing room with full-length mirror and ample storage space, and a glamorous en-suite bathroom lead off the master bedroom. Underfloor heating warms the glittering tiled floors, while gold tiles and a large artwork - 'The Kiss' by Gustav Klimt - make a feature of the free-standing bath. A large, walk-in shower, W.C., basin and heated towel rail complete the space, with a second shower room with W.C and basin also available on the ground floor.

The aptly named garden room occupies the rear of the ground floor, alongside a well-equipped utility with washing machine and tumble dryer and additional access to the garden. Elegantly furnished with a modern sofa, floral armchairs and antique features, like a linen cabinet reimagined as a plant theatre and an antique Japanese tea table, this space is cosy year-round thanks to underfloor heating warming the terracotta tiles.

French doors once again celebrate the superb sea views, leading into the private back garden, where an outdoor table and chairs invite you to enjoy a glass of wine on a long Hebridean summer’s evening, while watching fishing boats come in and out of the bay.

The seafood restaurants and lively pubs that line the harbour are within a short walk of Canna, as is the nine-hole golf course with great views to the Ardnamurchan peninsula and the Tobermory Distillery, one of the oldest in Scotland. There are lovely walks from either end of the harbour, leading out to the lighthouse in one direction and around the coast to Aros Park, where waterfalls, woodland and a loch await your exploration.

Heading west across the island, beautiful sandy coves tempt you for a swim or coastal walk at Langamull, Croig and Calgary, all within a 30-minute drive. You can also explore the sea from the water with a range of boat trips departing from the Tobermory pontoons, or explore the island on land with a guided walk or wildlife tour.
