Achnacraig is a cottage that truly invites you to escape it all within its thick stone walls, nestled deep in Glen Bellart with roaming stags and soaring eagles for neighbours.
This character cottage for six, which adjoins the owner’s house, has a wonderfully secluded setting, with far-reaching views right across the open glen with the river at its base and hugged by hills as far as the eye can see.
This natural setting makes Achnacraig a wildlife paradise, with red deer stags rutting and roaring just beyond the garden in the autumn. Forestry tails lead off from the garden, so you can venture deep into the forest or glen without even needing to jump in the car.
Arriving at the cottage, there is parking for two vehicles beside the entrance to Achnacraig. A roomy entrance hall promises plenty of space for walking boots and camera gear if you’re keen to capture the beauty of the island during your stay. A convenient ground floor shower room also leads off the entrance hall, as does the kitchen and living areas of the cottage.
Well-equipped and with one side open over the countertop to the living and dining area beyond, the cook won’t feel far from the action at Achnacraig and it’s easy to dine in if you wish.
Should you wish to dine out, despite the wonderfully remote views from the house, just 10 minutes to the west by car brings you to the village of Dervaig with its fine dining restaurant and pub, or 15 minutes to the east to Salen, where there are several coffee shops and a hotel restaurant too.
The living area at the cottage has lovely views over the mature gardens that surround the house, with a stunning rhododendron display in late spring. Comfortable sofas and armchairs allow you to sit back and relax after a day exploring the hills or hiking the loch shore down river at Loch Cuin, with a great range of maps and guide books to inspire your next day’s adventure.
Venturing upstairs, Achnacraig offers two king-sized double bedrooms, both with ample storage space to make yourselves truly at home for the week. There’s also a cosy twin bedroom with two single beds, and all dressed beautifully in high quality bed linen. There’s a family bathroom upstairs too, with a bath tub, WC and basin.
Outside the cottage, Achnacraig really comes into its own. The views stretch quite literally for miles across the glen and deep into the hills, which you can take in with ease from your elevated vantage point. A stone terrace has been perfectly positioned to make the most of the vista, with a westerly aspect making it especially magical at sunset.
If you’re keen to discover Mull’s wildlife, experience the island’s natural beauty and feel like you’ve truly escaped it all – and yet be close enough to nearby villages for provisions and meals out when you fancy – Achnacraig is the cottage for you.
