If you’re planning a holiday to Mull to celebrate a special occasion, or are simply looking for somewhere unforgettable to stay, you will love the glamour and impressive period features of Craig Ben Lodge. The garden even leads straight down to the loch!
Craig Ben Lodge is a magnificent building of the Bryce baronial style. The house is located in an outstandingly beautiful south facing location, below the mountain Creach Bheinn and beside the freshwater Loch Uisg. This grand building with its turreted spire and stately rooms make this an exceptional base for a family holiday on Mull.
The house is set within extensive mature gardens, which includes a walled garden with direct access to the loch shore. There is ample parking for several cars, outdoor seating and a barbeque area, where bird feeders and seed are provided to encourage visiting species.
Entering the lodge, there is an impressive hall with wood panelling, stained glass windows and a beautiful wooden staircase. The large dining room is the main room on the ground floor and features a huge bay window with fantastic views across the loch and hills. The dining table comfortably seats ten and there is quality crockery at hand. An open fire adds warmth and atmosphere to the room at mealtimes and armchairs offer a comfortable place to chat and take in the views after a meal.
A family games room on this floor has table tennis, board games and lawn/garden games, and a large utility room provides space for storage and drying items. There is a bathroom and a cloakroom on the ground floor too.
The kitchen is very well equipped with quality knives and Le Cruset cookware. A large dresser contains plenty of utensils, plates and dishes and there are wicker hampers to use for picnics by the loch. In addition to the electric cooker, there is an electric Aga that keeps the kitchen cosy and warm.
The main staircase takes you to the upstairs landing, from which you can appreciate the craftsmanship of the stairs and the large stained glass window. A twin bedroom on the left has excellent views over the loch, as well as a dressing table and washbasin. There is a double bedroom with curved wooden bed, storage for belongings, a basin and mirror.
A second spacious double bedroom has a nice mix of contemporary and traditional furniture, basin and mirror and again, plenty of storage space for belongings. There is a w.c and basin between these two bedrooms, as well as a separate large bathroom with bath (shower over), w.c and basin.
The ensuite master double bedroom is a beautiful room with large windows overlooking the side garden, a comfortable sofa and a nice selection of original paintings. The ensuite bathroom is spacious and has a w.c, bath (shower over) and basin. The rear staircase passes the last twin bedroom, which has easy access to both downstairs and upstairs bathrooms.
The living room on this floor is another grand room with a huge bay window and superb views over the walled garden, loch and hills beyond. There is ample seating, a good open fire, board games, television and a brilliant selection of books about the local area. A separate seating area faces the bay window, offering a fantastic place to enjoy games, or set up the telescope to watch Mull’s wildlife.
Guests staying at Craig Ben Lodge soon appreciate this is a really special place to stay thanks to the fabulous location on the shore of a lovely freshwater loch. This corner of Mull is an outstandingly beautiful part of the island, with rugged mountains, mature woodland and the sea all close by. It is a great area for walking and cycling too. There is a wonderful beach at Lochbuie, which is a short drive away, and Loch Spelve offers a great place for looking for otters and sea birds.
Craignure is the nearest village (25-minute drive) and has a shop, pub and coffee shop. Duart Castle is also easy to reach and well worth a visit.
