Oakfield House is a large and luxurious self-catering holiday home set in one of the finest positions you could wish for above Tobermory Harbour. Built in 1889, the house was constructed for Tobermory’s Lord Provost and was made using the very best materials – little wonder the house is widely regarded as one of the grandest in Tobermory.
Oakfield is a Visit Scotland 5 Star graded large holiday house, sitting within a large enclosed garden that gently slopes away from the property, presenting an excellent elevated aspect of the house. A driveway lined with caledonian pines and deciduous trees leads up to the parking area with ample space for five vehicles – ideal if all the family are getting together. Steps lead to a raised gravel area, where guests will enjoy taking a seat on the garden furniture and soaking up the most amazing sea views.
Entering Oakfield House, one is immediately struck by the opulent furnishings and high standard of finish in this remarkable property. A porch gives way to the main hall - a stunning space with a large staircase as a centrepiece and an ornate stained glass window bringing light into the room. High quality Maclean tartan carpet preserves the traditional Scottish theme in this welcoming property.
The contemporary living room on the ground floor is a very spacious, comfortable, family room with a huge bay window capturing the amazing views over Tobermory Bay, Calve Island and the Sound of Mull. Guests will enjoy the comfortable seating while the surrounding artworks enhance the space and a wood burner provides a cosy evening glow. This Victorian property has undergone extensive works to improve the insulation and warmth of the house, ensuring guests are comfortable and warm in all weather conditions, while retaining a sense of history and charm.
Across the hall from the living room you enter the formal dining room. This is a beautiful room filled with details to admire whilst enjoying a meal. The sea views are again outstanding from this room, which is made even more appealing with antique furniture and attention to detail throughout, from the high quality curtains to the decorative fire place.
The kitchen in Oakfield House is a modern space with a large island unit, extensive worktops and a superb Everhot stove that combines the warm homeliness of an Aga with the convenience of a top-of-the-range induction hob. The kitchen is outstandingly well equipped for all you will need during your stay. From the kitchen, an external door leads to the rear of the property. An adjoining pantry/utility room increases storage space and has a serving hatch opening directly to the dining room.
The first bedroom of this grand house is also located on the ground floor. A large en-suite twin bedroom, the space is beautifully furnished with high quality linen, comfortable bedding and a large window with a sea view, that lets light pour into the room. There is plenty of storage space for your belongings and a spacious en-suite bathroom with a large shower unit. There is also a separate cloakroom on the ground floor with a w.c. and basin.
Ascending the impressive timber staircase your reach the upper landing, a beautiful ornate space that leads via a hall to all other bedrooms and the second living space - a traditionally furnished drawing room. The drawing room is beautifully presented in a period style. Guests will congregate in the very comfortable leather sofas and chairs provided in the window to take in the enchanting view. A telescope makes it easy to take in the sights in closer detail, watching the boats come and go in the harbour. A piano is provided for musical evenings and a nice selection of books and games are here for guests to enjoy, along with another efficient wood burning stove. This is a space that encourages family and friends to come together in an incredibly atmospheric setting with everything you could possibly need.
As you would expect from this magnificent house, the master double en-suite bedroom (bedroom three) does not disappoint. This is a huge room with three large windows, including one that captures the outstanding sea views. There’s a sofa on which to relax and plenty of storage space to stow your belongings. Like all the rooms in Oakfield House, there are heavy, lined curtains making for a comfortable night's sleep. The en-suite is large with a luxurious walk-in shower, w.c. and basin.
Guests will be pleased to find that bedroom two is another king-sized room. This is the only bedroom that is not en-suite, however it does benefit from amazing sea views and has its own wash basin. The bathroom for this room is the main family bathroom down the hall. With a clawfoot bath with shower over, basin and w.c., this is an indulgent, pampering space you’ll be happy to relax in with a long soak.
Bedroom four is a large en-suite twin bedroom with garden views that is beautifully furnished. The delightful en-suite features a decorative fireplace, shower unit, w.c. and basin. Bedroom five is a king sized en-suite room with a stunning fireplace and lovely furnishings, with the en-suite benefitting from a shower, basin and w.c.
From Oakfield House you can enjoy some excellent walks, whether it is the short stroll down to Tobermory harbour to enjoy a meal or shopping, or a longer stride out to enjoy some of Mull’s excellent coastal walking – perhaps to the lighthouse at Rubh nan Gall or the woodland at Aros Park. Tobermory golf course is also nearby.
As well as the sandy town beach in Tobermory, you can also explore some of Mull’s best beaches with ease from Oakfield House, including Calgary, which lies 30 minutes to the west. Mull’s rugged and beautiful west coast is also within easy reach, where you’ll find excellent opportunities for wildlife watching. Boat trips depart from Tobermory harbour to visit the outlying islands or embark on a whale watching trip.
Oakfield House is the perfect choice for discerning guests that appreciate the highest standard of accommodation, for a most memorable and enjoyable holiday. Larger groups may wish to consider booking the adjoining cottage (to the rear with separate access) which is Oakfield Cottage (sleeps five).
Living Room and Drawing Room: There is a large ground floor living room with wood burning stove, television with freeview channels, DVD player, CD/Bluetooth music system. The first floor drawing room again has a wood burning stove, television with freeview channels, DVD player, CD/Bluetooth music system, upright piano and telescope.
Kitchen: Large bespoke kitchen with Everhot range cooker with three ovens, two hot plates and a separate induction hob. Dishwasher, two large fridge freezers, kettle, toaster, 2 microwaves, filter coffee machine, food processor, hand blender, baking equipment, a great range of cookware/utensils and many store cupboard basics.
Utilty/Pantry: Washing machine and tumble dryer, sink, iron and ironing board, storage space, washing powder is provided.
Bedrooms: Five large bedrooms all with modern, super comfy beds and quality bed linen and towels for guests. Bedroom 1 is usually set as a twin but can be requested as a double. Bedroom 4 is usually set as a double but can be requested as a twin - please let us know if you require these options at the time of booking (you can request on the booking form). Hair dryers provided. 2 x cots and 2 x high chairs are available.
Bathrooms: Four of the double bedrooms have an en-suite bathroom, all with walk in shower unit, basin and w.c. There is an additional bathroom (which has a bath with shower over, basin and w.c) that guests staying in the other guest bedroom can access.
Garden: Large private garden with a southerly aspect and stunning, uninterrupted views over the Sound of Mull. Outdoor table and chairs provided.
Heating: Full oil fired central heating with radiators in every room and towel rails in every bathroom.
Wood Burning Stoves: There are two wood burning stoves at Oakfield House. Both have log storage boxes, ash boxes, heat gloves and fireside companion sets and there is a starter pack of logs for guests for each stove.
Bed Linen and Towels: Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.
