The Old School House is a holiday cottage on the Isle of Mull that sleeps four people. It is a pretty stone-built property located above a pebble beach at Croggan. The setting is beautiful with excellent views over the sea towards Mull’s mountains. Farm animals sometimes graze the land around the cottage too because this land is farmed. If you’re a big fan of otters and hoping to see them during your stay, then the Old School House is the holiday cottage for you. The coastline here is great for otter watching, where rocky outcrops mix with pebble shores and deciduous woodlands. Following the path around the coast from the cottage leads to the idyllic sandy beach at Portfield, too.
Entering the Old School House, there is a roomy porch with space for coats and boots. This leads to the main hall and staircase. To the left is the living room, a small and cosy room with lovely sea views and a wood stove, selection of games and books about the local area and wildlife. It’s the perfect spot to settle down in for the evening, with the glow of the fire warming you as you watch the sea from the window.
The dining room is a bright room with more sea views and leads through to the kitchen. The heart of the home, the rustic kitchen is spacious with a large breakfast table, plenty of workspace and large double windows that look out over coastal woodland and hills. The kitchen, which in a past life was the schoolroom, still retains its schoolroom feel and has intentionally not been altered into a modern kitchen. Instead, guests will be charmed by a workable area with free-standing furniture that stays faithful to the house’s history - even the original bookcase becomes open fronted storage. From the kitchen, a utility room leads outside via the back door. There is also a cloakroom on the ground floor.
From the kitchen, a spiral staircase leads to a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom (with bath, hand basin and w.c.). This is a lovely cosy space in the eaves. Another set of stairs from the hallway on the ground floor leads to a landing where guests can access another double bedroom with great views from the two windows. Opposite the landing across from this bedroom is a well appointed bathroom with large shower room, free-standing bath, hand basin and w.c.
Outside the cottage, guests will enjoy making use of the picnic table with seating for an alfresco supper or mug of coffee in the morning. The garden around the house is enclosed and the surroundings are spectacular, so it’s a place where you’ll want to sit and stay a while. The house has excellent walking and wildlife viewing opportunities straight from the doorstep and is a superb location for a family holiday. It is worth noting this is a rural area with occasional farming activity and livestock around, so whilst dogs are allowed, due care should be taken in this regard.
Croggan is a spectacular and quiet area of the Isle of Mull and is regarded as one of its more scenic corners. It is a great place for walking and cycling. Kayaks and boats can be launched to explore the surrounding waters by those with relevant experience.
Whether you’re into walking, wildlife or water pursuits, if you are looking for a relaxing place to unwind on your holiday in outstanding natural beauty, then the Old School House is the place for you.
