If you are looking for somewhere extra special to stay, The Old Coastguards in Tobermory is an excellent choice. This luxury holiday cottage was developed from the Old Coastguards station and has been finished to a very high standard. Great for couples looking for a romantic retreat, and equally suitable for a family of four wanting to stay in the island's harbour capital, thanks to its sociable, open-plan layout too. Think hotel-level luxury, with all the comforts and facilities of a roomy home-from-home.
As soon as you enter the Old Coastguards, you will appreciate the beautifully finished interior, which elevates this self-catering property to another level. The modern, high-quality finishes, contemporary and oh-so comfortable furniture pieces and immaculate attention to detail every direction you turn truly sets the cottage apart. The spacious hallway offers plenty of room to unpack, or get the family ready for a day's adventure, with convenient access to a spacious utility and laundry room, complete with ice maker, as well as the bedrooms and bathrooms, which are both on the ground floor. A striking staircase ascends from here to the upper living level of the cottage.
The master double is a well-appointed room with an en-suite bathroom. Crisply presented bedding and sumptuous soft furnishings promise a good night's sleep and there are original artworks on display to make the room welcoming and cosy. The en-suite has been beautifully finished too, complete with a large walk-in shower, basin, heated towel rail and w.c.
The twin bedroom also benefits from the same high-quality finish and has use of a separate large bathroom, also on the ground floor, which has a bath with overhead shower, heated towel rail, basin and w.c.
From the hallway, a solid oak staircase leads upstairs to the main open plan living area. This space has a real wow factor, and thanks to the high ceiling and abundant natural light, it has a very bright and airy feel too. Take your coffee to the window to enjoy views over the neighbouring rooftops to the harbour and Calve Island beyond from the Velux windows.
Comfortable seating and a good range of local books and information are provided for you to enjoy. There is a television, DVD player and Sony Soundbar and Bose music system. A range of lamps and room lighting options are provided, so the space can be perfectly adjusted to suit you, creating a wonderful sense of atmosphere, whether you're planning your next excursion, or setting the tone for a romantic dinner or cosy movie night.
The dining table can seat six and there are comfortable upholstered chairs in vibrant colours to sink into. Guests will appreciate the very well-equipped, modern kitchen with its range of cookware and utensils. Cooking and dining at The Old Coastguards is definitely an experience to enjoy, and thanks to the open plan layout, it’s a sociable activity, too.
The house is situated on Breadalbane Lane where there is a mix of residential and utility buildings. It benefits from being only a short walk down to Tobermory’s harbourfront, where there are a good range of boutique gift shops and cafes to enjoy, as well as lively harbourside inns and seafood restaurants. Plenty of boat trips and land-based tours start from Tobermory, so a trip to one of the other islands off the west coast, or a wildlife tour to look for eagles and otters is a great way to spend a day before retreating back to this luxurious property for supper in style.
