Smithy House is situated in the little settlement of Pennyghael, by the old stone bridge on the road to Fionnphort, which crosses the Leidle River as it meets the sea. Guests only have to cross the road in front of the house to gain access to the grassy bank and pebble shoreline of Loch Scridain. This beautiful loch is one of Mull’s largest, with Ben More providing an impressive backdrop. Perched beside the stone bridge, this holiday cottage offers its guests a picture-perfect setting worth writing home about.
Smithy House is a characterful stone property that has been carefully renovated and furnished to turn it into a stunning holiday home. The house has been finished with quality pieces of contemporary furniture and neutral tones to create a modern interior with lots of great touches, offering guests a wonderful place to stay.
On the ground floor, the main living area has two comfortable sofas and a large coffee table, which houses a nice selection of books about Mull, some maps and magazines. This is a great space with a high ceiling, original artwork and excellent views over the sea and to the summit of Ben More, Mull’s highest peak.
A wood stove adds a cosy glow for the evenings and a table and set of chairs at the end of the room can be used for playing games, or planning the next day's adventures! A door leads through from here to the study, which offers an additional living space with a comfortable corner sofa and television with DVD player.
On the ground floor, there is a very well-equipped kitchen and dining area with table and chairs for four. The table is perfectly placed to take in the sea views from the window while you enjoy a morning coffee or evening meal – it is small touches like these that make holidays extra special. A plentiful supply of quality cookware and tableware make preparing a meal a breeze. There is also a bathroom on the ground floor with a large shower unit, basin and w.c.
Upstairs, a light landing area leads to the master double bedroom and a twin bedroom. Both rooms are beautifully furnished and have amazing sea views across the loch. A family bathroom is also located upstairs and has a bath with shower over, w.c and basin.
To the rear of Smithy House is a well-tended garden with a mix of gravel areas and beautiful planted borders. There is a picnic bench and purpose-built barbeque area and lovely views towards Ben More, creating a peaceful, picturesque spot for outdoor meals. A little gate takes you out of the garden and you can follow the river upstream to a series of pretty pools and falls.
The closest village is Bunessan, which is a 25-minute drive west. Bunessan has a village shop, cafe, pub and village hall. There is also a shop in Pennyghael, which sells essentials. Fionnphort is 30 minutes by car, and from here you can take a boat trip to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles, as well as visit Iona and its historical Abbey. There is a stunning coastal walk at Carsaig on the south coast. All in all, this attractive holiday cottage offers a wealth of wonderful things to do on the island, with fun to be had from the moment you leave the front door, as well as adventures that will take you further afield.
