Arriving at the Whisky Rooms, the vibrant atmosphere of Tobermory immediately sweeps you up, as steam curls into the sky from the chimney of the distillery next door and the river that feeds it rushes down into the calm waters of Tobermory Bay. The brightly painted harbourfront unfurls before you, promising a different dining experience for every night and plenty of independent shops, attractions and boat trips to explore by day.
Nestled amid the buzz of Tobermory, climbing a few stairs and stepping into the Whisky Rooms instantly cocoons you in a sense of calm. The light and bright interiors with warming finishing touches, from the wooden floors to the whisky barrel-inspired details and beautiful Jolomo artworks decorating the walls, makes the apartment a truly inviting space.
Entering into the living room, tidy coats and bags out of sight in the built-in cupboard and make yourselves at home – the plush ochre merle sofa promises the perfect spot to sink into after a day of adventure, while the window seats that offer a glimpse of the bay will be a winning combination over morning coffee.
Should you be able to resist the tempting array of eateries on the doorstep, from oyster bars and seafood restaurants to traditional Highland inns, then the Whisky Rooms offers all you need to self-cater with ease. Stock up on local island fare at the farm shop just across the road, or the weekly producer’s market in season by the pontoons, and make use of the modern kitchen with a great range of appliances and equipment, then tuck in at the breakfast bar in the living room atop whisky barrel-made bar stools.
The bedroom and bathroom both lead off the living room. Tucked to the back of the apartment, the bedroom enjoys the peace and privacy of distillery views, with comforting soft furnishings promising a perfect night’s sleep and yet more island-inspired artworks adding ambiance, with the convenience of a built-in wardrobe to unpack and feel at home.
The bathroom enjoys the same privacy, and is a wonderfully large space with twin his-and-her basins, a W.C, heated towel rail and large walk-in shower. Complete with an ochre occasional chair, this is truly a space to relax and unwind, ideal for sampling the local Tobermory-made soaps after a day exploring the island.
Located in the island’s harbour town, the museum and boat trips departing to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles all lie within a short walk, as does the ferry to Kilchoan for guests wishing to enjoy a day trip to the Ardnamurchan peninsula. Stunning walks to the lighthouse from one end of the harbour and along the coast past waterfalls and woodland to Aros Park at the other beckon, all without needing to hop in the car.
For those who do wish to hit the road and explore the entirety of Mull, the beautiful Calgary beach lies only 30 minutes to the west and a day trip to Iona, catching the passenger ferry from Fionnphort, will be a highlight of the holiday too.
