Enveloped by woodland, orchards and the foothills of Mull’s mountainous interior, with fallow deer regular visitors to the surrounding area and both Loch Ba and Loch na Keal within easy reach, Coorie Doon promises a haven for hikers and wildlife enthusiasts. Take a seat on the veranda with your binoculars to hand and you’re certain to be rewarded here.
Arriving at this beautifully renovated cabin, set in its own enclosed garden within the wider grounds of Torlochan House, you can unpack and settle in with ease, with private parking beside the cabin for two vehicles. Up the steps, a warm welcome awaits as the glazed front door welcomes you straight to the heart of the living area.
A modern and beautifully appointed dining kitchen, complete with Nespresso coffee machine, makes it effortless to self-cater with ease, as does the lovingly compiled welcome pack, featuring some local island flavours to try.
The cabin has a relaxed, farmhouse feel with charmingly hand-crafted accent furniture pieces and original artworks adding oodles of character. The kitchen and dining space flows into the living area, which, with vaulted ceilings and triple aspect windows is wonderfully light. At the heart of the space is the striking yellow Everhot stove, perfect on those cosy evenings with a dram of the local malt.
Patio doors open onto the veranda, where guests can make the most of the long Hebridean summer days with a barbecue or dinner alfresco.
Cocooned in the other half of the cabin are the two sumptuously appointed bedrooms and the tranquil shower room. Both bedrooms are furnished with wardrobe, dressing table, mirror and plush bed linen for a perfect night’s sleep, with the master double enjoying orchard views, decorated with bluebells in the spring, and the single bedroom looking out across the hills towards Killiechronan.
The shower room is well appointed and feels like a coastal oasis in miniature thanks to the driftwood-inspired touches, with a WC, basin and shower, plus a heated towel rail.
Coorie Doon’s location at Torlochan is hard to beat, with wildlife at every turn, from soaring eagles to grazing deer, and only a handful of other cottages in the vicinity.
Loch Ba, a freshwater loch, offers excellent walking opportunities with low-level paths along both sides of the loch reaching into the remote Glen Cannel, as well as the chance to head off track and ascend many of Mull’s finest hills, including Ben More. Keen anglers will also enjoy the opportunity to fish in the river and loch (permit required).
A couple of miles delivers you to the west coast and Loch na Keal, well known as Mull’s wildlife heartland, with eagles, otters, seals and more to discover with good fieldcraft. Killiechronan pony trekking is based at the head of the loch, offering the chance to canter across the beach or ride high into the hills on native Highland ponies.
And yet, venture east instead of west and a two-mile drive brings you back to the village of Salen, with a licensed hotel for an evening meal out, two super cafes for brunch or lunch and a filling station too. Coorie Doon really does deliver the best of both worlds with a taste of the wilderness and the creature comforts to make your holiday complete too.
