Tucked away in the picturesque Glen Forsa, Kilbeg Cottage is a well-maintained, traditional cottage in a wonderful setting, surrounded by steadily rising hills that lead up to higher mountains. Eagles swoop overhead, red deer roam freely and the easily recognisable outline of Beinn Talliadh stands majestically at the head of the glen. The cottage is detached with no other habitation around, so you can enjoy peace and quiet at its very best here, with wildlife for company.
There is a beautiful natural pool along the section of the River Forsa opposite the cottage. The land throughout the glen is farmed by the family who own the cottage, so you will have the company of pedigree highland cows and black face sheep, along with the abundant red deer and eagles that make this incredible landscape their home.
The holiday cottage is single storey and sits within a fenced garden with a mix of lawn and gravel areas. There is a picnic bench so you can make the most of the beautiful scenery around you. Birdwatchers will be in their element as this is a great area to see a variety of birds, including the golden eagles and sea eagles that the island is so well known for.
The front door leads into the sun room, where there is a set of table and chairs. This is a great place to enjoy a meal or have a cup of coffee in the morning, with big windows framing the hills and forest beyond. This leads through to the open plan living area, which has seating on one side and the kitchen on the other. There are windows on three sides of the room, allowing for plenty of natural light. Guests will enjoy the chance to cosy up beside both a solid fuel stove here and an electric fire too – the perfect way to warm up after a day out exploring the island. The living space is decorated in warm, neutral colours with a subtle Scottish tartan theme running through the rug, cushions and curtains.
There are three bedrooms. The double bedroom is directly off the living area with the other bedrooms toward the rear of the property, accessed via a small hall, alongside the family bathroom, which has a bath with shower over, basin w.c and heated towel rail. All of the bedrooms have fitted wardrobes and bed linen and towels are provided for guests. There is a utility cupboard at the rear of the property housing a washing machine and dryer too. A second external door leads to the rear garden and lawn.
Callachally farm, which extends from the shoreline at Glenforsa, through to the road at Glen More, has a lot to offer in terms of scenery, wildlife and walking, with over 6,000 acres of hill land. Dogs are welcome to stay in the cottage, but please keep them under close supervision to ensure livestock are not disturbed.
From the cottage door, it is a two-mile journey to the village of Salen, where there is a good Spar shop, several cafes and hotel with restaurant and bar. The Glenforsa hotel is less than a mile away, which also serves lunches and evening meals during the summer months to non-residents. Tobermory is a further 15 minutes' drive on from Salen, with its pretty harbour and array of shops and restaurants.
