Things to Do

The east coast of the island offers so much to explore. Within the village itself, you can visit the iconic Salen boat shipwrecks, which is also an excellent location to watch the local seal colonies basking on off-shore skerries, and – if you’re lucky – perhaps even an otter working the coastline too.

Salen Bay itself is a beautiful area to enjoy, with beautiful sunsets often captured here, as well as the opportunity to explore from the water by kayak or paddleboard from Salen Bay Hire.

Just a few miles north of Scots Cottage, you reach Aros Bay, where the river estuary flows into the sea beneath the dramatic ruin of a 16th-century castle perched on the hilltop. This makes an excellent walk around the coast, with interest at all tides and a good range of wading birds to be seen.

Tobermory, the island’s brightly painted harbour town, lies only 20 minutes’ drive north, where you’ll find a host of seafood restaurants, harbourfront inns and artisan gift shops, as well as boat trips and wildlife tours with expert local guides.

Heading west from Salen, a short drive towards Gruline brings you to the shore of Loch na Keal, a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise with the chance to see eagles and otters, as well as excellent views of the island’s highest peak, Ben More. And with pony trekking on traditional Highland ponies available at Killiechronan, you can even experience the beautiful terrain from the saddle.
