Things to Do
In a choice position in the island’s harbour town, Lorne Cottage arguably offers guests some of the best access to amenities, attractions and amusements on the island. Just down the hill, accessible via a footpath on Argyll Terrace, the harbourfront and town’s Main Street beckons. Here you’ll find more eateries than you could possibly indulge in within the space of a week, as well as food shops, the local bakery and farm shop, offering ample opportunity to sample the local produce too.
The Mull Museum promises an informative visit by donation and a great place to while away an hour or two on a dreicher day, as does the Tobermory Distillery, where a tour of the distillery followed by a guided tasting is certain to warm you through.
Boat tours depart regularly throughout the season from April to October to see the Treshnish Isles, the island of Staffa and further out to sea for the chance to spot whales and marine life too. You can also hop aboard the CalMac ferry that plies the waters between Tobermory on Mull and Kilchoan on the mainland to discover the most westerly point of mainland Britain and beautiful scenery of Ardnamurchan.
But coastal adventures are not limited to those on the sea. There are excellent local walks to enjoy without even hopping in the car, as you follow the cliffside footpath from the Main Street to the much-photographed Rubh nan Gall lighthouse. Or, at the other end of the harbour, enjoy the coastal path with great views over Tobermory Bay that delivers you to Aros Park, from which a wider network of trails lead you onwards around the lochan and waterfalls – especially beautiful in the autumn.
Land-based wildlife tours also depart locally, with local guides offering an expert insight into Mull’s big five and the fieldcraft to maximise your chances of encountering them. And at the end of each adventure-packed day, Lorne Cottage beckons with a cosy open fire to relax beside.
