Things to Do
Faoileann Ghlas’s setting at Glenforsa will tick the boxes for every generation of the family. For those who wish to stay in, the wonderful open sea views up the Sound of Mull, with the Green Isles in the foreground, reaching all the way to the Ardnamurchan peninsula’s Ben Hiant in the far distance, promises hours of tidal interest, scanning for marine mammals and watching ferries and fishing boats ply the waters.
Venturing out from the cottage, a field lies between the house and the shoreline and shingle beach, which makes a lovely coastal amble before dinner. The field itself promises interest too, as it is also the Glenforsa Airfield, with small aircraft landing there, so do take care before crossing!
Turning attention inland, Glen Forsa stretches back miles, deep into Mull’s mountainous centre, and offers a range of excellent walks. Those not wishing to tackle anything too strenuous will enjoy the circular route that follows a track deep into the glen with superb mountain views to Beinn Talaidh – a great area to watch for birds of prey over the hills and grassland – before leaving the track to join the river and return along the riverside.
For more ambitious hikers, the ascent of Beinn Talaidh (762m) will appeal, or for a challenging hill walk without making the summit, climbing to the Dakota memorial, where traces of the 1945 plane crash can still be seen, offers an interesting excursion too.
With its central location, many of Mull’s highlights are within a short drive, whether heading a few miles west to reach Loch Ba, Loch na Keal and perhaps even tackle munro, Ben More; northwards to Tobermory, the island’s harbour town; or south to explore the coastline and seat of Clan Maclean at Duart Castle. It’s all possible with ease from Faoileann Ghlas.
