Things to Do
If you’re keen to leave the car at home and venture straight out on adventures from the cottage door, then Kilbeg Lodge delivers in spades. Follow the track to meet the meandering River Forsa, then loop back along the riverbank for a low-level walk with stunning scenery to enjoy.
For keen hikers, the ascent of Ben Talaidh (761m) at the head of the glen will prove irresistible. Or, hike out as far as the Dakota memorial, with remnants of the plane wreckage still seen on the hill.
Wildlife is in abundance here, sharing the 6,000 acres of family-run hill farm with Highland cattle and black-faced sheep. Keep your eyes trained to the skies for good chances of spotting white-tailed sea eagles and golden eagles, as well as landward for the red deer often roaming the glen.
Excellent angling awaits too (permit required) on the River Forsa, or make the short journey to the coast for sea fishing.
While you feel totally immersed in the wild landscapes around you at Kilbeg Lodge, the Glenforsa Farm Shop and Café are only a mile distant, nearby on the main road. The village of Salen lies an easy 2.5-mile drive north, with an excellently stocked village shop, filling station, hotel serving meals and two superb cafes.
Around 30 minutes’ drive to the north, the island’s harbour town of Tobermory awaits with its seafood restaurants, lively inns, locally made ice cream and excellent bakery. The whisky distillery offers tours and tastings, a great way to warm up on a rainy day, and you can sail for Staffa and the Treshnish Isles as day trips from the Tobermory pontoons.
