Things to Do
Solas na Greine must be one of the island’s best located cottages when it comes to making the most of the coast. Spectacular beaches are only a stone’s throw away, beginning with the split boulder beach beside the ferry slipway in the village, and extending right around the headland to wondrous stretches of sand at Fidden, Knockvologan and beyond, with many more hidden coves to discover with a little exploration on foot. The Ross of Mull’s iconic pink granite can often be seen as you traverse the coast or comb the beach, with several bays offering sheltered waters that beckon for a taste of cold water swimming.
Located in Fionnphort, the cottage also offers excellent opportunity to take advantage of local sea tours and boat trips. A regular passenger ferry delivers visitors to the island of Iona, whether they go to see the historic Abbey, or encounter the unique wildlife of the area, including the elusive corncrake and beautiful flowering machair beside the beaches. Boat tours also depart to Staffa, which makes an excellent day out for every generation, with the chance to see dramatic basalt columns, hear the acoustics of Fingal’s Cave and meet the ever-popular puffins in season.
Keen walkers will also be rewarded, with trails varying in difficulty from gentle strolls along the shore of Loch Pottie, to the scenic path to Tormore’s disused granite quarry, board-walk paths to remote beaches like Market Bay, and challenging terrain in the largely untouched Tireregan Nature Reserve.
Whether you spend your days on land or sea, returning to Solas na Greine promises all the comforts you could wish for, with the luxury of a welcoming pub (The Keel Row), innovative fine dining restaurant (The Ninth Wave) and the flavours of local seafood (The Creel Seafood Bar) all on the doorstep.
