Things to Do
The Sea Shanty’s maritime interiors can’t help but inspire a sense of seafaring adventure and fortunately, you’ve got plenty to discover from the doorstep! A peaceful amble over the hill beside the cabin, Tor Mor, delivers you to a stunning hidden sandy beach overlooking the Bull Hole – a stunning spot for a romantic picnic at sundown, or, for the brave, a bracing paddle!
You’ll see the stunning pink granite for which this area of Mull is well known appearing across the landscape, creating a beautiful contrast to the white shell-sand and clear turquoise waters. There are many more coves to discover, from the rockpool-decorated sands at Fidden, to the beautiful beach at Knockvologan, from where it is possible to cross the sandbar to the Isle of Erraid on a low tide.
For those seeking to take to the sea, boat tours depart from the village to the island of Staffa, where the puffins nest in season, and home to dramatic basalt columns and the famed Fingal’s Cove. The CalMac passenger ferry gently plies its way across the Sound of Iona from the village too, taking only around 10 minutes to deliver you to another enchanting isle’s shores, steeped in history, culture and yet more spectacular beaches.
Adventurous souls will love the chance to pick up a paddle and try their hand at kayaking, canoeing and sailing, with Bendoran Watersports only a short drive away.
Mull’s magical wildlife will also draw plenty of attention, with soaring eagles, elusive otters and marine life aplenty to discover in the area. Located just along the Ross in Pennyghael, Wild About Mull wildlife tours offer guided day tours to maximise your chances.
After ample adventure whether on land or sea, having worked up an appetite guests of the Sea Shanty are in for a treat. A short walk into the village delivers you to the welcoming Keel Row pub. Or, dine alfresco with a laid-back seafood supper cooked fresh by the Creel Seafood Bar. Venturing in the opposite direction, there’s also the Lazy Cow Café on the Kintra road for coffee, cake or a light lunch.
With a quiet setting gazing out to sea in this rural corner of Mull, The Sea Shanty promises peace and tranquillity in spades, yet with the convenience of a thriving village, boat tours and restaurants on the doorstep.
