Things to Do
Those with a love for the great outdoors will find their perfect homestay at Mucmara Lodge. Once guests have finished exploring the cottage's idyllic grounds, including a loch and pretty woodland, they can venture further onto the Quinish Estate, where a network of pathways promise walks for all abilities down to the old pier, the shore and through the woodland out to Quinish Point. These tracks make for excellent cycling, too, and all of this may be enjoyed without once needing to jump in the car!
The sea loch, Loch Cuin, flows in from the sea here, with the village of Dervaig at its head. A haven for wildlife, the tidal shores of the loch are home to a plethora of exciting birdlife, including unusual waders, and both white-tailed and golden eagles enjoy territories in the area. On the other side of the loch, stunning coastal walks await your discovery at Croig, where a colony of seals are often seen hauled out on the rocks. For the wildlife enthusiast, wildlife tours with a focus on conservation depart from the village too, led by Nature Scotland, and boat tours to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles depart from Tobermory (30-minute drive), as well as from Ulva Ferry on the island's west coast.
Explore the coastline at Croig and discover quiet sandy beaches that are tempting for a dip on Mull's long Hebridean summer's days. The well-loved white shell sand of Calgary Beach lies only a 10-minute drive away, too, with Langamull another scenic choice, but for those who might miss the cafe and ice cream at Calgary, it's best to come prepared with a picnic for Langamull.
Surrounded by the magic of Mull's great outdoors, it would be easy to imagine foregoing some of the creature comforts, but there's no need to do that at Mucmara Lodge. In the village itself, guests can enjoy laid-back evening meals at The Bellachroy and a fine dining experience at Ar Bord, as well as seafood lunches from The Piece Box. Just a short drive down the single-track road to Penmore, guests can also enjoy meals at Am Birlinn, which features a menu that celebrates the island's local ingredients and comes highly recommended.
