Things to Do

Calgary Bay takes centre stage here, with the sweeping white horseshoe of shell-sand only a few hundred metres' walk down the hill. You can follow the sculpture trail from the cafe and gallery down to the coast and reward yourselves with an ice cream from the boat shed kiosk (open seasonally) at the end.

The beach itself is a coastal enthusiast's paradise, with lovely sheltered waters thanks to the headlands to either side, making it a popular place for a bracing cold-water swim or to paddle board or kayak. Needless to say, this beach with its long stretch of sand will be a hit with your four-legged friends, too!

The beach is backed by a beautiful field of machair, a special type of wildflower meadow that is rarely found beyond the Hebrides. It offers a beautiful seasonal display during the spring and summer months, and is sometimes grazed by sheep, too.

It's also the beginning of a stunning coastal hike, picking up a path that runs along the north side of the beach to the old pier, before climbing the hill to continue around the headland above. You can make your way all the way to Cailach Point, which makes a fantastic hike with views to outlying isles, with a good chance of spotting marine mammals from these headlands, too.

A drive south down the coastal road offers up stunning views to the Treshnish Isles as you navigate the shores of Loch Tuath and soak up the scenery. En route, you'll pass Ulva Ferry, aptly named, as this is where you can summon the ferryman to carry you across to the community-owned island of Ulva, which has the Boathouse cafe for lunch and a range of pretty walks to discover, as well as a well-preserved old black house. You can also hop aboard a boat trip here to Staffa to see Fingal's Cave and out to the Treshnish Isles, home to many seabirds and puffins in season (mid-April to July).

Back on Mull, you'll also find the stunning gardens at Lip na Cloiche at Ulva Ferry, a haven for reimagined treasures and surprising plant combinations, many of which may be more at home in the Canaries than Mull, but thrive in the unique west coast microclimate. Open to visitors by donation, they make a great visit before dinner at nearby Croft 3 restaurant.

Tobermory, the island's harbour capital with its brightly painted buildings and range of seafood restaurants, cosy inns and cafes, lies only 30 minutes' drive away, with the island's oldest inn, The Bellachroy in Dervaig, only 10 minutes away too.
