Things to Do
Vitamin sea comes guaranteed when you stay in Calgary, with Mull's famous horseshoe beach just a short walk down the hill, either following the road or picking up the fun Art in Nature sculpture trail. Its crystal-clear, turquoise waters are popular among wild swimmers, kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders, while four-legged friends will relish a run along the beach discover the fascinating rock pools too.
A path also leads down the north edge of the beach, past the old granite pier, and cuts up the hill to the headlands above. You can walk all the way round to Cailach Point from here, which makes an excellent adventure with far-reaching views to outlying isles and a good chance to scan the seas for porpoise, seals and basking sharks too. You can also start this walk straight from the cottage, heading down to Sunipol first, then round to Cailach Point too.
Further afield in the north of the island, beach-goers will also enjoy visiting the shell-sand coves at Langamull and Port na Ba, or venturing down the west coast to the black sands of Traigh na Cille.
Also on the west coast, a 20-minute drive delivers you to Ulva Ferry, which, as the name suggests, is where you can summon the wee ferry boat to visit the community-owned Isle of Ulva, home to beautifully scenic walks and the excellent Boathouse restaurant too. Lip na Cloiche Gardens are also located at Ulva Ferry and well worth a visit, with this fascinating hillside garden climbing challenging terrain and showcasing a range of plants more often seen in the Canary Islands than Scotland!
Boat tours to Staffa and Treshnish Isles also depart from Ulva Ferry with Turus Mara - an excellent half or full-day trip taking in Staffa's dramatic basalt columns and Fingal's Cave, as well as the wonderful colonies of nesting puffins on Staffa and Lunga in season (mid-April to July) too, before the seals come ashore to pup in September. Dolphins are often spotted from the boats, making these trips an excellent sea-based wildlife adventure.
