Things to Do

Located in the island’s south west, where there are just a handful of villages and the landscape is filled with crofts and coastline, Ceann na Fhuarain promises a peaceful escape with the amenities of a small village and the stunning views of a Hebridean isle.

This corner of Mull feels much quieter and more rural than the north end of the island, and what you forgo in attractions and amenities you more than make up for in the abundance of stunning walks, hidden shell-sand beaches and – of course – access to boat trips to the stunning island of Staffa, where puffins nest in season, or to the enchanting island of Iona with its famous abbey, which depart only 15 minutes’ drive away from Fionnphort.

Those seeking a taste of the Hebrides will be in their element here, with more beaches than you could possibly squeeze into a week to visit. Fidden, Uisken and Knockvologan are among the most accessible, while the sweeping sands at Ardalanish are well worth a visit too. Venture off the beaten track and explore Market Bay, said to be the choice of the Royal family when visiting, or from Knockvologan meander the pink granite coastline and discover more hidden coves you’ll likely have entirely to yourselves.

There are some superb walks in the area too, whether you explore the former pink granite quarry near Fionnphort or follow the gentle path around Loch Pottie before warming up at the nearby Keel Row pub.

For adventure seekers, then the Tireregan Nature Reserve offers an excellent challenge passing patches of beautiful old woodland to eventually arrive at Traigh Gheal, a stunning white sand beach. The walk from Scoor to the clearance village of Shiaba is also a great choice, offering fine coastal views and a great chance to soak up the local wildlife too.
