We had a great stay at Macquarie House. The location of the house is idyllic overlooking Loch Ba and 4 miles from Salen which has an excellent Spa which was useful for restocking supplies. The House has good access to Craignure in the south and Tobermory in the north. We were able to drive around the whole island during the week we were there. Highlights were climbing Ben More (another Munro ticked off) and Mull Charters on Loch na Keal to see White Tailed Sea Eagles. We were a group of 7. The house could be described as tired in places (chairs, oven and bathrooms) but is comfortable.

We had a fabulous stay at Macquarie House. Such a wonderful setting and a good situation for getting around Mull. We had everything we needed here and The owners were very friendly and helpful with extra ideas of things to do. We would definitely use this venue again.

Wonderful property in a perfect location to explore the island.
Plenty of room and very well kitted out kitchen.
It is in need of a little TLC, particularly the bathrooms, but this would not put me off staying again.

6 of us stayed here in early June and what a find.
Very large house which included a games room, sun room, 2 lounges, 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms. An endless supply of logs FREE.
Beautiful Loch Ba which is very close and great for a dip.
Deer, Peacocks aplenty and eagles are just some of the wildlife which we had the pleasure of getting close to.
The village of Salen is 4 miles away and has a great shop, the delightful little bespoke bakery which by the way sells the BEST coffee and cakes on the Isle of Mull. A Hotel, a newly opened Farm shop and cafe which is just outside Salen. Thanks.

A disappointment. The setting is beautiful and incredibly idyllic unfortunately you have to go inside at some point. The entire house was grimey, worn and mouldy. The bathrooms were mould ridden and incredibly dirty. You could clearly tell that only the surfaces at eye level had been wiped and even then, incredibly poorly. Bedrooms were stained & dusty and moth ridden. The kitchen was grimey. The pool table was beyond broken, and the ping pong table was a sad excuse for one. An embarrassment.

Editor's Note: We followed up Dawn's complaint with the owners, who were away and agreed the house was not presented as it should have been. They have plans to resolve these issues urgently and have refunded £800.00 to the guests by way of apology, which the guests accepted was fair.

Fantastic property with amazing space both inside and outside. Although some of the equipment is dated we had everything we needed to celebrate Christmas in style.
Amazing grounds and loch to explore and despite stormy weather. Although WiFi can be limited the grounds and house provided all the entertainment and adventures needed for 4 adults and 6 children.
Great communication when needed with the owners.

Absolutely fabulous house! Had all the space and equipment we needed & the weak WiFi was a bonus ( I'd happily do without). The setting is outstanding, owners very friendly & helpful.
25 years after our marriage at Tobermory registry office with 2 dogs as bridesmaids, we returned with children & dogs to enjoy a magical week
Booked again for this October which we're really looking forward to. We know Mull extremely well & I consider this to be the nicest house we've found. 5* indeed but don't tell anyone ????

Lovely spacious house, very clean and comfortable for the 10 of us who stayed for the week. Great sized kitchen with every appliance you could possibly need. The price was very reasonable and we would be more than happy to stay there again in the future. The owner was an absolute delight and exceedingly helpful.

Exceptional property with wonderful grounds. Fallow deer, peacocks, eagles, such beautiful creatures on the doorstep.
Very clean, spacious rooms. An open fire in one room and a log burner in the other. All wood provided by the thoughtful owners.
Yes, the televisions may be a challenge to get up and running but to be honest with you - one doesn’t come to a private estate to sit and watch television.....
Very happy to recommend this lovely house.

Macquarie House was a lovely and reasonably priced place to stay for our party of 9 people and a few dogs. The setting on Loch Ba was spectacular with scenic walks on the shore (make sure your dogs have tick protection). Kitchen was well stocked with pots, pans, and tools. The place is definitely a rental - with older towels and fixtures. Wifi, as others have said, was weak and didn't extend throughout the house. Communication from IoM Cottages was excellent. They even connected me to someone who could prepare a reheatable meal for a birthday dinner. Host communication could have been better.

We loved the house and the amazing estate it is in. The house had everything we needed to escape and relax for a week. The wildlife in the estate is outstanding. We had a wonderful close encounter with 3 sea eagles on a walk along the Loch. Lots of fallow deer and some very cute goldcrests in the trees around the house. It is also in a perfect location for touring the island. The honesty cake box, Spar and the takeaway in Salen were all handy too. Teenage boys went sea kayaking with Bendoran Watersports which they really enjoyed. Lovely owners too.

Lovely historic property with friendly hosts who had us in for drinks. Location and scenery fantastic. The reason we would not give it five stars relate to facilities. There were TV's in 2 sitting rooms which nobody in out party of 6 could get to work - the owner told us they were a "challenge". Multiple isolation switches for appliances, including showers, with no instructions - these are NOT familiar to overseas visitors. Oven needs better guidance as the temperature controls are no longer visible. Plumber fixed blocked bath waste but did not clean bath. Access best by AWD. Towels old

Interesting wildlife with deer and peacocks in particular. Very well equipped house with fabulous drying room which is so useful after swimming and kayaking. Lovely wood burning fire with well stocked store for logs and kindling.
    Very welcoming hosts.

Stunning house in a dramatic setting! It wasn’t unusual to see deer really close by on the drive to the house.
So spacious and really comfortable too. For an extended family of ten it was perfect.
Being so close to Loch Ba really added to holiday - as did the peacocks!

This is an amazing house with amazing character and set in the most wonderful part of Mull. The house is spacious, comfortable and well equipped.
Beautiful scenery all around, peacocks roam the estate and are often to be seen. Loch Ba is just a stones throw away and there are some lovely walks in the surrounding area.
The owner is a charming lady and very helpful.
If you are seeking a relaxing holiday in the most splendid house then this is the house for you.
I can highly recommend this lovely house.

What a wonderful week we have all just experienced based at Macquarie House. Stunning location, spacious and well equipped for big parties. The central location make it a very well placed property in order to explore all of the island.
The Loch moments from the house is a gem and we were exceptionally lucky to have a week of sunshine. if weather was inclement there are 2 fires, plenty of space and games to enjoy.
Great host and would highly recommend and revisit.

Our extended family loved this house. The space suited us very well with a large open kitchen / seating / patio access room where we spent most of our time, apart of course from the highly contested pool and ping pong tournaments in the games room. We also really appreciated the fabulous drying room for recovery after soggy outings! The surroundings are beautiful and Loch Ba perfect for our kayak and dinghy exploits and the brave swimmers in the party. A lovely peaceful old-fashioned family holiday in a cracking house.

A very warm welcome to a very warm and comfortable house. The peaceful location is wonderful and great for exploring Mull and local walks. The small Spar in Salen has a great selection of food. A very interesting bookcase and a lovely warm lounge with a wood-burner (infinite wood provided!) made for very convivial evenings. Perfect!

Excellent location, beautiful scenery with free roaming peacocks and we watched a white tail eagle soaring above us. Bedding clean and beds comfortable. Ideal for large parties with spacious en suite bedrooms.
Couple of negatives (however they don't outweigh the positives) was general cleanliness. Fridge had to be cleaned before use and owner should attend to the numerous spiders webs throughout the property!

Macquarie house is spacious with easy access to a loch. we were a party of 7 but more could have been easily accomodated.Whilst the building itself has some character, fixtures and fittings are very basic, think Ikea. As mentioned in other reviews mobile phone signal is non existent, and the patchy internet is more reminisent of dial up, forget netflix and prime. Certain parts of the house are pet friendly like most rentals, however, there is no provision for dealing with pet waste, you can't use dog poo bags, instead you are encouraged to use a shovel to 'fling it into the long grass'.

By K Jones stayed in August 2019

Editor's Note: Thank you for your feedback and sorry to hear you were disappointed in some respects. As per our advice to guests pre-arrival, we would expect guests to take responsibility for their own dog and there is nothing to suggest otherwise in our literature. The WiFi speed is also mentioned in the property information.

Perfect setting, lovely house, well equipped and large enough that 9 people can spend time together or all find a corner to do their own thing. Loch is beautiful and even got used to noise of peacocks! Kitchen well equipped and easy to make meals for everyone. Had best view ever of Sea eagle at Scoor and excellent sighting of otter at Loch Scridden . Great holiday and if traveling with a group would recommend this house

A fabulous house in a truly stunning location. Certainly helped by the 2 weeks of almost wall to wall sunshine! We were 2 families (5 children) for the first week and then 3 generations of one family the second week - from grandparents to an 11 month old, and the house suited us all perfectly with plenty of space and comfort. Brilliantly located to visit lots of places of interest - we really loved Calgary beach and Ulva island for walks and awesome food at the Boathouse. Perfect days also spent gazing at the house, whiling away hours by the Loch, spotting wildlife and planning our next visit!

Wonderful house and just perfect for our family. It is well located in Mull with easy driving assess to all parts of the island. Highlights for us were Staffa, Calgary Beach, Tobermory and several interesting hikes. Our only problem with the holiday was that it was too short.

All of our group agreed that this, is a good house ,in a central location and amongst the best that we have stayed in years. The utility room It is ideal for walkers , it has good drying facitities. Kitchen and rooms are well appointed. The games room is a plus in inclement weather. Own transport essential.

We have walked the hills as a group for over 20 years and all agreed that this was the most fantastic house and location that we have stayed in throughout the years. The bedrooms and en-suites were exceptional, the kitchen diner huge and well appointed and the two lounges with open fires were cosy and great for a night in. Salen, a couple of miles away provides everything that a visitor could want from a well stocked shop to a welcoming hotel/bar at the Salen Hotel. The walking on the island was magnificent and we can't wait to return. Thank you.

Wonderful large and spacious yet warm and homely house, in a beautiful setting and excellent location. The house is generously provisioned with real log fires, several reception rooms and a big easy kitchen. Good showers (needed after swimming in the loch!). Delightful friendly hosts (not at all intrusive), peacocks, fallow deer and hedgehogs all added to our delight. We almost hoped for a truly windy rainy day so we could just stay home! We loved it and are already planning our return for a longer stay. Thank you so much.

6 adults plus 4 children aged 10, 8, 6, & 6 years all had a great time. House very spacious, comfortable and well equipped. Use of Loch Ba for sailing/canoeing restricted to non-fishing day (Sunday)! A good base for exploring Mull if you adapt to single track roads with passing places. Allow about 20 minutes for 7-8 miles car travel during peak season.

We have had a wonderful week at Macquarie house. The owners couldn't have been more helpful during our stay. The location of the house on the shore if Loch Ba is stunning. The house itself is superb, well equipped and comfortable. Lots of space to accommodate a larger party than ours, with room to find a peaceful corner or 3, and the games room was a big hit with my kids (14,10 and 7). A great base to explore the island. We have enjoyed plenty of trips out during our week. The local pony trekking at Killiechronan was great, and the local restaurants were super. I can thoroughly recommend the Sea Life Survey whale watching trips!

Very comfortable house in a beautiful and peaceful location. We had the same friendly welcome that others have mentioned. Lots of different rooms and areas to retreat to for a bit of personal space when going with a large party. Well equipped with everything you may need - particularly in the kitchen. Weather wasn't great when we were there but a couple of times we enjoyed the opportunity it gave us to spend some time in the house relaxing in front of the fire and investigating the two bookcases full of books. We would definitely go again.

This is the best and most generously equipped holiday home I have ever stayed in! Mrs Harmer made us feel most welcome. The house and surroundings are absolutely stunning! Peacocks and fallow deer including a white stag, inhabit the environs and were seen every day. The space in and outside the house allowed different family members to 'do their own thing' without impinging on others. Every possible bit of equipment was supplied, and the warm boiler/utility room with a pulley, plus a washing machine and tumble dryer, made drying clothes easy. We definitely hope to return.
